After the French Revolution and the weakening of Austria the city was annexed first to Bavaria and then to the Kingdom of Italy. After the fall of Napoleon Bolzano returned to the Austrian Empire (from 1866 Austria-Hungary) in which he remained until 1918.

Duomo Maria Assunto is a cathedral in the heart of the city. It is a true gem of 11th-century Romanesque and Gothic architecture. In the course of the study of the cathedral, traces of an early Christian religious building (V-VI centuries) and then of a medieval smaller church (VIII-IX centuries) were discovered.
