Burgas is located in the southeastern part of Bulgaria on the Black Sea coast. The modern city occupies the western part of the Bay of Burgas located in the eastern part of the lowland of the same name. Burgas is surrounded by three lakes: Burgas, Atanasovsky and Mandra. The city has a subtropical climate with warm summers and mild winters.

Burgas is located 389 km from Sofia , 272 km from Plovdiv, 133 km from Varna and 335 km from Istanbul.
Burgas is the largest city in southeastern Bulgaria, an important industrial center and seaport. Despite the fact that the outskirts of the city were inhabited in ancient times it actually began to be built only in the late 19th - early 20th centuries. Today Burgas is developing mainly as an industrial and commercial center. For tourists the city can offer beach holidays and walks in the large Seaside Park, excursions to museums and archaeological sites as well as day trips to other fascinating sites along the Black Sea coast.

History
In the ancient Greek period the city of Pyrgos was founded on the site of Burgas. In the Roman period there was a military colony for veterans of the wars of Vespasian's reign. In the 4th century the Roman settlement was destroyed by the Goths.

Modern Burgas was founded in the 17th century on the site of a fishing village. In fact by the early 20th century it was a provincial town. After the First World War Burgas began to grow and develop rapidly. Now it is the big industrial and economic center of Bulgaria.
Attractions
Seaside Park is a huge green area on the Black Sea. The 72,000 m² are a parkland, elegant waterfronts with fountains, playgrounds, cafes, a summer theater and more.

Lake Atanasov (in the vicinity of Bourgas) is famous for its therapeutic muds and meadows as well as its unusual color of water.

Pier is one of the symbols of Burgas. It crashes into the sea and is 300 meters long. Pier is a very popular place for walks with beautiful sea views.

The lighthouse located in the port was built in the late 19th century.

The gramophone is a 2-meter sculpture in the city center one of the symbols of Burgas and a popular meeting place.

Cyril and Methodius Cathedral - the main temple of Burgas built in 1897 - 1907 by the Italian architect Tuscany. It is a single nave basilica the interior of which is divided by marble columns.

Armenian Church is one of the oldest buildings in Burgas. This religious edifice was founded in the late 17th century. It is a simple single-nave structure with a bell tower added during the late reconstruction.

St. Anastasia Island is one of the most interesting cultural sites in the vicinity of Burgas. Throughout history the island has been a pirate's den, a monastic refuge and a prison.

Archaeological Museum - interesting archaeological finds from the Thracians, ancient Greek colonies and the Roman period. There are also large ethnographic and historical museums in Burgas.
How to get there
Burgas has an international airport which has seasonal connections with cities of Great Britain, Germany, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway. Regular trains run to Sofia and other major Bulgarian cities. Bus connections with many cities in Turkey and Greece. There is a daily ferry between Burgas and Batumi.
