History
The old town of Kranj is located between the Sava and Kokra rivers. The first settlements in this place existed during the Celts. Further development of the city was associated with its important strategic position and function of the outpost on the way of the Germanic tribes.

The city quickly became the Slavic center of the region. In the 13th century, Kranj was granted city privileges. In the Middle Ages the city was surrounded by fortified walls with defensive towers. At this time Kran is actively growing and developing - new buildings and structures, temples are being built. In the 19th century the city became a powerful industrial center of the region.
The main attraction of Kranj is the charming old town. This monument of history and culture has preserved many monuments and ancient architecture. The old part of the city was once completely surrounded by fort walls with eight defensive towers. Up to now only three towers have been preserved.

Getting acquainted with the sights of the city can start from the main square. This is the true heart of the Old Town. Today the appearance of the square was in the 16-17 centuries.

In the northern part of the square is installed a city fountain, restored in the first half of the 19th century. The first fountain on this site was built in the 16th century. There are several important historic buildings on the main square.

St. Kantian's Church is one of the symbols of the historic center. Beautiful 15th century Gothic church. One of the most important monuments of gothic architecture in Slovenia. Not far from the church is a 5-meter bronze statue of the greatest Slovenian poet - Franz Presern.

The Town Hall is an old Renaissance 16th century palace. Today there is a museum and art gallery on the ground floor.

Khislstein Castle is an ancient castle, purchased in the 16th century by nobles of the Khisl family and later rebuilt by them. It now houses the National Museum.

The city has probably the best transport infrastructure in Slovenia. The international airport is located only 7 km from the city. And Kranj itself is connected with transport not only with Slovenian cities but also with Austria and Italy. Postojna is 75 km away and 145 km to the Adriatic coast of Piran .
