History
In the 11th century a castle was founded here in the vicinity of which a settlement was formed. By the 13th century Salisbury had become the center of the bishopric and in 1226 was granted the status of a trading town (the opportunity to hold fairs).
By the 14th century Salisbury had become the largest city of Wiltshire and was surrounded by a fortress wall. In the Middle Ages, its prosperity was based on trade. The city was also of great religious importance due to its magnificent cathedral. In 1483 it became one of the centers of the uprising against Richard III.
Attractions
The medieval northern gate was built between 1327 and 1342 and leads to the cathedral quarter. In the past they have served as a small prison.
Salisbury Cathedral is a masterpiece of the Gothic and one of the most visited religious buildings in England. This church was built in the 13th century and has an exceptional Gothic facade. The most notable feature of the building is the high spire (123 m) which is one of the largest in the UK. The Salisbury Cathedral has a beautiful interior that combines sandstone and dark marble. You can also see the ancient tombstones (some of them dating from the 13th century). Bright stained glass windows date back to the 19th and 20th centuries.
Also of interest is the cathedral quarter which contains several historic historic buildings dating from the 14th to 18th centuries.
Old Sarum is the predecessor of modern Salisbury located on a hill 3 km from the city. The sources of this structure go back to ancient times. The Romans founded a fortified fort here. And during the Saxons a settlement arose. In 1075 William the Conqueror chose this place to build a castle. In 1220 modern Salisbury was founded and old Sarum was abandoned. Now it is a significant ruin with a beautiful landscape on the outskirts of Wiltshire.
The tourist popularity of Salisbury is largely based on the fact that the city is located near the famous Stonehenge. It is a grand megalithic construction of the Neolithic period, built between 3000 and 1500 BC. The mysterious Stonehenge consists of huge stone blocks called menhirs or megaliths.
Wardrobe (Wiltshire Museum) is an elegant 13th-century building that is famous for interesting exhibits and ancient weapons (a collection of rifles).
Salisbury has a beautiful old town with quaint old streets filled with architecture from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. On the old Market Square is an interesting medieval monument topped by a cross.
One of the most beautiful historic buildings in old Salisbury is the Church of St. St. Thomas of Canterbury, built in the 15th century and containing magnificent murals.
